CORRECTIONS
Corrections policy
How to report an error in a record, and how we handle it.
We expect to get things wrong sometimes
Every record is a dated observation of material that vendors change without notice. A product gets renamed, a price page moves, a security statement is rewritten, a product is absorbed into another. When that happens, our record can become wrong even though it was accurate when we wrote it.
We would rather hear about it than not. A correction is not an embarrassment for the directory. An uncorrected error is.
What to report
- A fact that is wrong. For example, a price path that has changed, a firm-size claim that no longer appears, or an integration the vendor no longer lists.
- A statement that has changed. If a vendor has rewritten its confidentiality or training wording, we want the new wording and the page it appears on.
- A missing statement. If a vendor has published a statement we recorded as Not stated, send us the page and we will re-check it.
- A product that has been retired, renamed, or absorbed.
- A record that describes the wrong product entirely.
How to report it
Send the report to [email protected] with the subject line starting with Correction. Include the record you are writing about, what is wrong, and the vendor page that shows the current position.
A link to the vendor's own page is the single most useful thing you can include. We correct against the vendor's published material, not against a description of it.
What happens next
We re-check the vendor's published material. If the record is wrong, we correct the field and update the date it was checked.
If the change is material, we note it in the changelog so the change is visible rather than silent.
If the record is right and the report is mistaken, we leave the record as it is. We will tell you why if you ask.
What we will not do
- We will not remove a record because a vendor dislikes it. A record is removed only when the product no longer exists as described, and then it moves to the graveyard with the evidence.
- We will not change a fact without a source. A correction needs the vendor's own published material behind it.
- We will not accept payment to change or remove a record.
- We will not record a statement a vendor does not publish, and we will not remove a Not stated entry on request without a published statement to replace it.
Response time
We aim to re-check a reported error within a few business days. Corrections that affect a confidentiality or training statement are treated as the highest priority, because those are the facts readers act on.
