The short version
A standard record is free and always will be. Vendors may pay for visibility through a labelled featured placement or a practice-area sponsorship. Both are one-time payments that buy permanent placement.
Payment never changes a lifecycle status, a coverage label, a recorded fact, a confidentiality statement, a training statement, or the order of results. That rule is the whole reason the directory is worth reading, and it does not bend for a sponsor.
What a paid placement buys
A clearly labelled placement. Every paid position carries a visible Sponsored label and a sponsored link attribute.
Permanent placement. The payment is one-time and the placement does not expire and does not need renewal.
Visibility only. The placement changes where your product appears, and nothing else.
What a paid placement cannot buy
It cannot change a status or a coverage label. A product is Active or Retired on the evidence, and its coverage label describes only what the vendor publishes. Neither moves for payment.
It cannot change a recorded fact, a price path, a firm-size scope, or a data-location claim.
It cannot change a confidentiality or training statement, and it cannot add a statement a vendor does not publish.
It cannot move a product ahead of other products inside a filtered, checked result.
It cannot remove a vendor caution or a retirement record.
Placement types
Featured record. A labelled highlight inside the task the product already belongs to. The product must already qualify for that task on the evidence.
Practice-area sponsorship. A labelled sponsor line on one practice-area hub, such as immigration or family law. The sponsor line sits outside the record list and is marked as paid.
How ordering works
Inside a filtered result, records are ordered by lifecycle status first, then by whether the vendor publishes data-handling statements. A paid placement is shown in its own labelled position and never displaces a record from the ordered list.
This is the same firewall described in the methodology. If you are evaluating the directory as a buyer, you can rely on it: a sponsor cannot buy its way past the evidence.
Getting listed for free
You do not need to pay to be in the directory. If your product is sold to small law firms and you publish a product page, you can submit it and we will review it on the same standard as every other record.
Submitting does not guarantee publication, but the bar is simply that the product is sold to small law firms and has a live product page. You do not need a security page, a published price, or a data-handling statement to be listed. Where those are missing, the record says so, and readers decide what that means for them.
